In addition to a programme of education modules, two academic lab placements and a Clinical Research Facility placement, each cohort of the MMI Clinical & Translational Research Scholars Programme concluded the first year of their structured 4-year PhD with a 10-15 week industry placement.
Over 25 organisations offered a variety of 10-15 week placement experiences in the various areas of bringing drugs and devices from concept to patient and market.

Placement providers were distributed across the enterprise sector with a translational medicine/technology focus, including biomedical start-ups, medical device companies, clinical research organisations and multinational pharmaceutical companies.
Industry placement supervisors continued as external mentors during years 2-4 of the PhD. This to advise on career development, transferable skills and demonstrating the relevance of their studies to potential industry employers. Mentoring was facilitated by SkillsLog, the MMI online facility for our PhD students to track and record the transferable skills that they acquire over the course of their PhD studies.
The MMI Clinical & Translational Research Scholars Programme is funded under the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI) Cycle 5, and co-funded under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
