Post Summary
Tuberculosis now ranks alongside HIV as the world’s most fatal infectious diseases. In addition, the WHO has declared that antibiotic resistance is now a world-wide threat to public health. In the TB Immunology lab, based in the Trinity Translational Medicine Institute at St James’s hospital, we are uniquely poised to carry out bench-to-bedside research. Our group are focused on better understanding the cellular and molecular process that ensue in the host in response to exposure to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of TB. We will use this research to create new and innovative strategies aimed at boosting the host response and decreasing our reliance on antibiotics in the clinic. Furthermore, this research will help to improve vaccine strategies against TB.
